Creating An Effective Asynchronous Workshop in Canvas

In-person and online synchronous workshops have been given each semester by CLA’s LATIS Research group on various research topics such as R, Qualtrics, Text Mining, and more for over 5 years. However, with the large shift to online/remote learning and teaching, LATIS’ Research group wanted to explore how a research workshop could be taught in an online, flexible, asynchronous format. This presentation will cover the conception, creation, and implementation of LATIS’ first ever asynchronous Canvas workshop– the Introduction to Survey Sampling course: https://z.umn.edu/intro_sampling. The focus will be not on survey sampling, but rather on our process of creating an effective, asynchronous Canvas short course. This talk will discuss the creation of this course from the bottom up, including: the conception of the course, course aims, layout of the site, scaffolding, alignment of objectives/assessment, course navigation, and accessibility features/considerations. We’ll end the talk with things learned and places for future improvement.
